There
are numerous different cowls on the market to help cure the problems of blow downs. It is fair to say that some of
these products work in certain locations, but unfortunately some of them do not make any
difference at all. A lot of chimney sweeps and technicians don’t like recommending
them because of the unreliable results. Instead, we at County Down Sweeps, recommend the fitting of a Marcone
Pot. In the years we have been dealing with the smoke problems associated
with coal fires, appliances and boilers, we have found that the Marcone pot
is the most effective.
If the Marcone pot does not help alleviate the problem,
then going to more radical lengths may be the only solution. There is a fan
system on the market which is basically
an extractor fan fitted to the top of the chimney. The electrically powered
fan creates an artificial draught in the flue and removes combustion gases
and smoke etc. These products are
expensive and are usually a last resort.
