The following day we took
part in the traditional parade, which has the sweeps from respective
countries following their banner and being introduced to the thousands of
people lining the route and massing in the village square. The sweeps throw
out little plastic figures, badges, boiled sweets, and smudge the faces of
the young and old….the pretty girls get the most attention for some reason,
very common is the sound of shrieking young women with dirty faces, and
boisterous laughter from the brothers-in-soot. The parade takes about an hour
to pass considering the volume of sweets partaking, followed by the sweeps
climbing to the rooftops calling “Spazzacamino” (Chimney Sweep in Italian) to
each other. After hearty hugs, strong
hands shakes and kisses, we said our goodbyes to the friends new and old,
promising to meet up the following year, if not before. A great day out, for
young and old so if you happen to be in the Vigezzo valley region of Northern
Italy next September, join in the carnival atmosphere of the oldest
profession in the world. |
